Honda Civic For Sale — Import From Japan

EK9 Type R, EG6 SiR, EF — the VTEC hatch

The Japanese-market Civic is a different car from the one America got: lighter, revvier, and available in specifications — above all the EK9 Type R — that were never sold in the United States.

Eligibility runs on month and year of manufacture, not model year — as of today, anything built September 2001 or earlier qualifies. Within a generation marked “phasing in” some build dates are legal and others are not, so the individual car matters. Tell us the chassis and we will check its exact build date before you commit.

The EK9 Type R

The EK9 is the one to know: a hand-assembled B16B making 185 PS from 1.6 litres, a helical limited-slip differential, seam welding, close-ratio gearbox and a stripped, red-Recaro interior. America never got it. It is fully eligible now and prices reflect that it has been discovered.

Below it, the EG6 SiR is the value pick — B16A VTEC, light, and still cheap enough to be a usable car rather than an investment.

Be careful with Type R replicas. Red badges, Recaros and a B-series swap do not make an EK9, and the chassis prefix is what settles it.

What we check before bidding

What it costs to import a Civic

The prices above are the vehicle in Japan. On top of that, budget roughly $3,000–$5,000 for ocean freight, standard export and import fees, US customs duty, and US title service. We quote all of it as one landed price — unlike exporters who advertise a to-port “shipped” price and leave you to hire your own customs broker. See the full cost breakdown.

Is the Civic legal to import?

Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year, so within a single generation some build dates qualify before others. If the exact car you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.

Is the Civic you want legal yet? Our Honda Civic import guide breaks eligibility down by build month and works through what one costs landed and titled in the USA.

How buying one from us works

We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan — photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

Honda Civic FAQ

Is the Honda Civic legal to import to the USA?

EK9: Fully eligible — the entire run is 25+ years old. EG6: Fully eligible — the entire run is 25+ years old. EF9: Fully eligible — the entire run is 25+ years old. EP3: Not yet — the earliest cars become eligible in December 2026. Eligibility runs on month and year of manufacture, not model year — as of today anything built September 2001 or earlier qualifies.

Was the Civic Type R ever sold in America?

Not until the FK8 generation in 2017. The EK9, EP3 and FD2 Type Rs were never sold in the United States, which is why importing is the only route to one.
