Nissan Silvia S15 For Sale — Import From Japan

Nissan's last Silvia, the S15, was built from January 1999 to August 2002. After the S14, the car shrank back inside Japan's compact size class, and the range was cut to two grades. The Spec-R gets the SR20DET turbo. It's rated at 250 PS with the six-speed Aisin manual or 225 PS with the four-speed automatic, and the grade also has a helical limited-slip differential and extra chassis bracing. On the Spec-S you get the naturally aspirated SR20DE, rated at 165 PS with the five-speed manual. Both grades came in Aero form with a large rear wing, and later as b package, L package and final V package editions. Autech built a tuned Spec-S (the Autech Version) and the style-A, which has its own bumpers and a tan leather interior. It also made 1,143 examples of the Varietta, a retractable-hardtop convertible. Since the two grades share the S15 code and five-lug hubs, it's the engine and the model plate that tell you a car is a Spec-R. The car most buyers ask for is a manual Spec-R. Before anything else, pin down the trim, the gearbox and the accident history.

What to check on a Silvia S15

What it costs to import a Silvia S15

The card prices above are what each car costs in Japan. The shipped price on a card is that car delivered to your nearest US port, with ocean freight and export fees included. We then clear it through US customs as your importer of record and handle the title, so there's no customs broker for you to hire. The full cost breakdown has the details.

Is the Silvia S15 legal to import?

Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year. If the exact S15 you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.

How buying one from us works

We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan, with photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

Can I import a Nissan Silvia S15 to the USA?

Phasing in — cars built up to September 2001 are eligible now; the last cars qualify in August 2027. Of the cars in stock, 97 are from 2000 or earlier and qualify under the 25-year rule now. The 36 from 2001 qualify only if built September 2001 or earlier. As for the 47 still too new, we can buy one now and store it in Japan until it qualifies. Month and year of manufacture are what count, and we check the exact build date before you commit.

How long does it take to get a Nissan Silvia S15 from Japan?

Plan on about 45–60 days from purchase. The car is inspected and exported in Japan, spends 3–5 weeks at sea to your nearest US port (East Coast, West Coast, Gulf and Honolulu), and then goes through US customs, duty and title. We handle every step as your importer of record.

What do you check before buying a Nissan Silvia S15?

Every car is inspected in person in Japan before any money moves. On this chassis we look hardest at: For a Spec-R, look for the SR20DET, the six-speed and the A-pillar boost gauge, then confirm the grade on the model plate; Drift and crash history shows up as kinked or freshly painted chassis rails and reshaped strut towers; Listen for driveline clunks or buzzing through the gear lever. There isn't much margin in the Aisin six-speed for extra power, so budget for gearbox work on a tuned car; Upper-engine clatter points to a failing variable cam timing actuator, and misfires point to the coil packs. Watch for blue or white exhaust smoke as well.

Spec-R or Spec-S?

The turbo car is the Spec-R. Its SR20DET makes 250 PS with the six-speed manual, and it has a helical limited-slip differential and extra chassis bracing. A Spec-S runs the naturally aspirated SR20DE (165 PS with the five-speed manual), with smaller front brakes and a viscous LSD on the options list. They share a body, so go by the engine and model plate instead of the badges.

Why is the automatic Spec-R rated lower?

Nissan rated the SR20DET at 225 PS with the four-speed automatic and 250 PS with the six-speed manual. An automatic Spec-R still has the turbo engine, but it's a different car to drive and it's valued differently.

What is the Silvia Varietta?

Autech built the Varietta, a convertible with a retractable metal hardtop. Announced in May 2000, it was on sale from July. The base car is the Spec-S, which means the naturally aspirated SR20DE and a five-speed manual or automatic. Only 1,143 were produced.
