Toyota Supra A80 (MK4) For Sale — Import From Japan

Every A80 Supra carries the JZA80 chassis code and a 3.0-liter 2JZ straight six, so it's the grade that separates one car from another. Production of the fourth generation ran from May 1993 to August 2002. The body is a 2+2 hatchback coupe, with an Aerotop removable roof panel offered alongside the fixed roof. The sequential twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE goes in RZ, RZ-S and GZ cars. It's rated at 280 PS in Japan, against about 320 hp in US trim. The SZ and SZ-R use the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE at 225 PS. The RZ gets a six-speed Getrag manual, while the GZ was the automatic twin-turbo grade. In August 1997 the twin-turbo engine gained VVT-i, and Toyota's rated torque rose from 44.0 to 46.0 kgm. Most buyers want a manual RZ or RZ-S. That's why an SZ wearing RZ badges is the most expensive mistake to make with this car.

How buying one from us works

We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan, with photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. The 1 from 2001 qualify only if built September 2001 or earlier. As for the 1 still too new, we can buy one now and store it in Japan until it qualifies. Plan on about 45–60 days from purchase. The car is inspected and exported in Japan, spends 3–5 weeks at sea to your nearest US port (East Coast, West Coast, Gulf and Honolulu), and then goes through US customs, duty and title. We handle every step as your importer of record.

What do you check before buying a Toyota Supra A80 (MK4)?

Every car is inspected in person in Japan before any money moves. On this chassis we look hardest at: RZ and SZ cars both carry the JZA80 code, so the code alone won't tell you which one you're looking at. Check the engine itself (the 2JZ-GTE has two turbos and an intercooler, the 2JZ-GE neither) and the grade on the model plate; On the test drive, the second turbo should come in cleanly as the revs rise. The handover depends on several vacuum-operated valves, so a flat spot, or a car that runs out of breath, usually means split vacuum hoses or a sticking control valve; Make sure the gearbox and the model code agree on a six-speed car. A GZ converted to a manual isn't a factory RZ, whatever the asking price says; Uneven panel gaps, overspray on rubber seals and repaired front rails point to accident repair, and they matter more on an A80 than almost any other JDM car. A straightened example is worth far less.

What is the difference between RZ, RZ-S, GZ, SZ-R and SZ?

RZ, RZ-S and GZ are the twin-turbo cars, with the 2JZ-GTE rated at 280 PS. The RZ has the six-speed manual, the GZ is automatic, and the RZ-S was offered with either. SZ-R and SZ cars use the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE at 225 PS, and the SZ-R is the manual one.

Is a post-1997 VVT-i A80 worth paying more for?

From August 1997 the 2JZ-GTE had VVT-i. Toyota's figures show peak torque rising from 44.0 to 46.0 kgm at the same 280 PS. That's a change, but a modest one. Condition, transmission and originality move an A80's value far more than which side of that date it was built.
