How Much Does It Cost to Import a Car from Japan?

Ocean freight from Japan (by body type)
Freight is priced by the vehicle's body type, because larger vehicles take more space on the vessel. These are our standard rates (USD):

The "shipped price" trap (what most exporters leave out)
This is the single biggest hidden cost in JDM importing. Almost all exporters advertise a "shipped" price — just getting the car to a US port. What that leaves out is the entire US import side: customs clearance, import duty, port fees, and pickup. With a shipped-only exporter you have to find and hire your own customs broker before the car lands, and pay those import costs yourself — usually a surprise.

What about import duty?
The US charges import duty based on the vehicle's value — generally about 2.5% for passenger cars (trucks, including kei trucks, are higher). Because it is calculated on the car's price, your total import cost varies from car to car. We calculate it up front and include it, so there is no separate bill later.
Worked example: importing a Nissan Silvia
Say you buy a clean 1998 Nissan Silvia (a coupe) for the equivalent of $9,000 all-in in Japan:

Costs to watch out for (the JCT scam)
Watch for Japanese Consumption Tax (JCT). Some exporters add a 10% JCT to the bill — or quietly bake it into the vehicle price so it does not show as a line item. Because the vehicle is being exported, the sale should be tax-exempt, so a 10% JCT on an export is a hidden cost. Always get a complete, itemized, shipped (CIF) price before you commit, so nothing is buried.
