Honda Civic EK For Sale — Import From Japan
Importers buy the EK, the sixth-generation Civic, for two cars. It was sold in Japan from September 1995 to 2000 as a three-door hatchback and as the Civic Ferio sedan, and a US-built coupe was added in January 1996. It's known there as the Miracle Civic. Honda used it to launch three-stage VTEC and the Honda Multimatic CVT on the 1.5-liter VTi. One of the two is the SiR (EK4), whose B16A DOHC VTEC is rated 170 PS with the five-speed manual and 155 PS with the four-speed automatic. The other is the Type R (EK9), added in August 1997 with the 185 PS B16B, a helical limited-slip differential, Recaro seats and a five-speed manual only, and it was never sold in the United States. It stayed in production until November 2001, after the rest of the EK range had been replaced. You'll only find the hatchback with front-wheel drive, though four-wheel drive was offered on the Ferio. A September 1998 facelift changed the headlights, bumper, fenders, hood and taillights, and the model-code prefix moved from E-EK to GF-EK. Badges and seats are easy to swap, so check the chassis plate to confirm which car you're looking at.

What to check on a Civic EK
- Start with the chassis plate, which reads EK9 on a Type R and EK4 on an SiR. Red badges, Recaros and a B-series engine can be added to any EK, but the plate can't be changed.
- A factory Type R has five-stud hubs, a B16B engine code on the block and a helical LSD. Four-stud cars wearing Type R parts aren't EK9s.
- B-series swaps into VTi and Ri shells are frequent. Match the engine number and type to what the model code says the car left the factory with.
- Ask for a compression test, then check the top end. The B16B makes its peak power at 8,200 rpm. VTEC should engage cleanly, and the engine should pull to the limiter without hesitation.
- Race-base Type Rs and early race-base SiRs were sold without some comfort and safety equipment. Check that the airbags, ABS and air conditioning match the grade being claimed.
- Look for rust in the rear wheel arches, sills and front rails, and for signs of accident repair under the carpets and in the engine bay.
What it costs to import a Civic EK
The card prices above are what each car costs in Japan. The shipped price on a card is that car delivered to your nearest US port, with ocean freight and export fees included. We then clear it through US customs as your importer of record and handle the title, so there's no customs broker for you to hire. The full cost breakdown has the details.
Is the Civic EK legal to import?
Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year. If the exact EK you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.
How buying one from us works
We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan, with photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.
Honda Civic EK FAQ

How many Honda Civic EK for sale are manual?

Of the cars in stock, 64 are from 2000 or earlier and qualify under the 25-year rule now. Month and year of manufacture are what count, and we check the exact build date before you commit.
How long does it take to get a Honda Civic EK from Japan?
Plan on about 45–60 days from purchase. The car is inspected and exported in Japan, spends 3–5 weeks at sea to your nearest US port (East Coast, West Coast, Gulf and Honolulu), and then goes through US customs, duty and title. We handle every step as your importer of record.
What do you check before buying a Honda Civic EK?
Every car is inspected in person in Japan before any money moves. On this chassis we look hardest at: Start with the chassis plate, which reads EK9 on a Type R and EK4 on an SiR. Red badges, Recaros and a B-series engine can be added to any EK, but the plate can't be changed; A factory Type R has five-stud hubs, a B16B engine code on the block and a helical LSD. Four-stud cars wearing Type R parts aren't EK9s; B-series swaps into VTi and Ri shells are frequent. Match the engine number and type to what the model code says the car left the factory with; Ask for a compression test, then check the top end. The B16B makes its peak power at 8,200 rpm. VTEC should engage cleanly, and the engine should pull to the limiter without hesitation.
How do I tell a zenki EK from a kouki EK?
The prefix on the chassis plate settles it. Kouki cars date from the September 1998 facelift and have a model code starting GF-EK instead of E-EK. They also have new headlights, front bumper, fenders, hood and taillights, plus a 2-DIN audio opening in place of the 1-DIN one.
EK9 Type R or EK4 SiR?
It's the same body either way. The SiR's B16A is rated 170 PS with the manual and 155 PS with the automatic, against 185 PS for the Type R's B16B, and the SiR does without the Type R's helical LSD, five-stud hubs and lightened interior. That B16A is a well-proven engine, and unlike the Type R, the SiR was available with an automatic.
What is the difference between the Type R and the Type R-X?
Mechanically there isn't one. The Type R-X, added in December 1999, takes the standard Type R and adds a CD stereo, manual air conditioning, power windows, power-folding mirrors and keyless entry.
