Honda Civic EG For Sale — Import From Japan
Three kinds of VTEC went into the EG, the fifth-generation Civic. The ETi had the 94 PS lean-burn VTEC-E and the VTi a 130 PS SOHC VTEC, while the SiR and SiR-II (EG6) got the 170 PS B16A DOHC VTEC. Honda launched the EG in Japan in September 1991 and marketed it as the Sports Civic. Besides the three-door hatchback there was a four-door sedan, which took the name Civic Ferio, and a US-built coupe reached Japan in February 1993. The hatchback is front-wheel drive. It has double-wishbone suspension at all four corners and a split tailgate whose glass lifts while the lower panel folds down. Of the two EG6 grades, the SiR was the plainer car and came only with a five-speed manual, while the SiR-II added equipment, an optional viscous limited-slip differential and an automatic option rated at 155 PS. If you're importing one, the EG6 is the car to find, with the VTi as the lower-cost alternative in the same body. The EK replaced it in September 1995.

What to check on a Civic EG
- EG4 VTi and ETi shells with B-series engines and SiR badges turn up often, so read the chassis plate. An SiR or SiR-II should say EG6.
- When telling an SiR from an SiR-II, go by what's on the car rather than what the listing says. The SiR was five-speed only and isn't catalogued with the LSD option, while an SiR-II may have the optional viscous LSD.
- Honda rated the automatic B16A at 155 PS. An automatic SiR-II described as 170 PS has been changed or misdescribed.
- On manual cars the B16A makes its peak power at 7,800 rpm. Make sure VTEC engages cleanly and pulls without hesitation, and get a compression test done.
- Open the split tailgate and check the lower gate's hinges, latch and seals. Then look for water in the spare-wheel well.
- Check the front rails for accident repair, and the rear wheel arches, sills and floor for rust.
What it costs to import a Civic EG
The card prices above are what each car costs in Japan. The shipped price on a card is that car delivered to your nearest US port, with ocean freight and export fees included. We then clear it through US customs as your importer of record and handle the title, so there's no customs broker for you to hire. The full cost breakdown has the details.
Is the Civic EG legal to import?
Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year. If the exact EG you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.
How buying one from us works
We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan, with photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

What do you check before buying a Honda Civic EG?
Every car is inspected in person in Japan before any money moves. On this chassis we look hardest at: EG4 VTi and ETi shells with B-series engines and SiR badges turn up often, so read the chassis plate. An SiR or SiR-II should say EG6; When telling an SiR from an SiR-II, go by what's on the car rather than what the listing says. The SiR was five-speed only and isn't catalogued with the LSD option, while an SiR-II may have the optional viscous LSD; Honda rated the automatic B16A at 155 PS. An automatic SiR-II described as 170 PS has been changed or misdescribed; On manual cars the B16A makes its peak power at 7,800 rpm. Make sure VTEC engages cleanly and pulls without hesitation, and get a compression test done.
EG SiR or SiR-II?
They share the B16A and the same 170 PS with the manual gearbox. The SiR is the plainer car, sold with the five-speed only and without the LSD option. Step up to the SiR-II and you get more equipment, the choice of a four-speed automatic (rated 155 PS) and a viscous LSD on the options list.
EG6 or EK4?
The EG is the earlier, more compact car. The EK4 has a 50 mm longer wheelbase (2,620 mm against 2,570 mm) and more rear-seat room, and its generation added the EK9 Type R. Both use the B16A, rated 170 PS with the five-speed manual and 155 PS with the four-speed automatic. Condition counts for more than which one you pick.
Was there an EG Type R?
There wasn't. Honda's first Civic Type R was the EK9 of 1997, and the EG6 SiR-II was the top hatchback of this generation.
