Toyota Land Cruiser 80 For Sale — Import From Japan

1989–1997 — 1HD-T and 1HZ diesel, solid axles

The 80-series is the last Land Cruiser with solid axles front and rear, and the Japanese market got the diesel engines America never did. That combination — coil-sprung, full-time four-wheel drive, factory locking differentials and a 1HD-T turbodiesel — is why importing one is worth the effort.

Eligibility runs on month and year of manufacture, not model year — as of today, anything built September 2001 or earlier qualifies. Within a generation marked “phasing in” some build dates are legal and others are not, so the individual car matters. Tell us the chassis and we will check its exact build date before you commit.

Why the JDM car and not a US one

The United States received the 80-series only with the petrol 3F-E and 1FZ-FE. Japan got the 1HD-T and 1HD-FT turbodiesel straight six — the engine the rest of the world associates with the model, and the reason most people import one. VX Limited is the well-equipped trim and the one most likely to carry factory front and rear differential locks.

The whole 80-series run ended in 1997, so every one of them is now fully eligible to import.

What we check before bidding

What it costs to import a Land Cruiser 80

The prices above are the vehicle in Japan. On top of that, budget roughly $3,000–$5,000 for ocean freight, standard export and import fees, US customs duty, and US title service. We quote all of it as one landed price — unlike exporters who advertise a to-port “shipped” price and leave you to hire your own customs broker. See the full cost breakdown.

Is the Land Cruiser 80 legal to import?

Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year, so within a single generation some build dates qualify before others. If the exact car you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.

How buying one from us works

We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan — photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

Toyota Land Cruiser 80 FAQ

Is the Toyota Land Cruiser 80 legal to import to the USA?

HDJ81: Fully eligible — the entire run is 25+ years old. HZJ81: Fully eligible — the entire run is 25+ years old. FZJ80: Fully eligible — the entire run is 25+ years old. Eligibility runs on month and year of manufacture, not model year — as of today anything built September 2001 or earlier qualifies.

Can you import a diesel Land Cruiser to the USA?

Yes. Vehicles 25 years or older are exempt from EPA emissions requirements in original configuration, which is what makes the JDM 1HD-T and 1HZ diesel 80-series importable when a modern diesel would not be.

What is the difference between the 80 and the Land Cruiser Prado?

The 80-series is the full-size station wagon on a solid-axle chassis. The Prado is the smaller, lighter model sold alongside it. They are different vehicles despite sharing the Land Cruiser name.
