Nissan Skyline R31 For Sale — Import From Japan
Two Skyline firsts came with the R31: the RB straight six and HICAS rear-wheel steering. It launched in August 1985 and picked up the nickname "Seventh". At first there was a four-door sedan and a pillarless four-door hardtop, the only one in Skyline history. A wagon came in early 1986, and in May 1986 Nissan added the two-door GTS coupe, which is the one most buyers want today. The six-cylinder engines are the RB20E and RB20ET single-cams and the RB20DE and RB20DET twin-cams, and four-cylinder and diesel versions were sold as well. With the August 1987 facelift, the sedan and hardtop got the coupe's front styling and RB20DET output went up. The headline car is the 1987 GTS-R coupe, a limited run of 800 built for Group A homologation with the 210 PS RB20DET-R. Autech followed in 1988 with a 200-car GTS Autech Version. Sedans, hardtops and coupes were built until spring 1989, and the wagon kept going into 1990.

What to check on a Skyline R31
- A GTS-R needs the RB20DET-R with its larger turbo and intercooler, the fixed front spoiler and large rear wing, and a chassis plate to match. Bodywork on its own doesn't make one.
- Some GTS coupes have the GT Auto Spoiler. On those, the lower front spoiler should extend from the air dam once you're above about 70 km/h.
- Upper grades came with HICAS. Make sure it's still fitted and working and hasn't been removed or disabled.
- A sedan or hardtop built before August 1987 shouldn't wear the coupe-style nose. That front arrived with the facelift, so on an earlier car it's a conversion.
- Rust around the window trim and taillight apertures and in the sills and floors. On the RB20, ask about timing-belt history.
What it costs to import a Skyline R31
The card prices above are what each car costs in Japan. The shipped price on a card is that car delivered to your nearest US port, with ocean freight and export fees included. We then clear it through US customs as your importer of record and handle the title, so there's no customs broker for you to hire. The full cost breakdown has the details.
Is the Skyline R31 legal to import?
Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year. If the exact R31 you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.
How buying one from us works
We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan, with photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

What do you check before buying a Nissan Skyline R31?
Every car is inspected in person in Japan before any money moves. On this chassis we look hardest at: A GTS-R needs the RB20DET-R with its larger turbo and intercooler, the fixed front spoiler and large rear wing, and a chassis plate to match. Bodywork on its own doesn't make one; Some GTS coupes have the GT Auto Spoiler. On those, the lower front spoiler should extend from the air dam once you're above about 70 km/h; Upper grades came with HICAS. Make sure it's still fitted and working and hasn't been removed or disabled; A sedan or hardtop built before August 1987 shouldn't wear the coupe-style nose. That front arrived with the facelift, so on an earlier car it's a conversion.
What is the R31 GTS-R?
Nissan built it in 1987 as a homologation special for Group A touring-car racing, introduced alongside the facelift and limited to 800 cars. The RB20DET-R gets a larger turbocharger, a dedicated intercooler and an equal-length stainless exhaust manifold, and it's rated at 210 PS. On the body there's a fixed front spoiler and a large rear wing. It's the R31 most collectors are looking for.
Coupe, hardtop or sedan?
If you want the sporting model, that's the two-door GTS coupe. It was added in May 1986 and has a B-pillar. The four-door hardtop is pillarless with frameless door glass, a body style no other Skyline had. As for the four-door sedan, it has framed windows and a conventional B-pillar.
Zenki or kouki R31?
Anything after the August 1987 minor change is a kouki. That update gave the sedan, hardtop and wagon the coupe's front styling and raised RB20DET output slightly. The GTS-R belongs to the kouki era. To find out which one you have, read the build date on the plate.
