Nissan Skyline R30 For Sale — Import From Japan
Paul Newman fronted the R30's advertising, and in Japan it's remembered as the "Newman Skyline" after him. Nissan built it from August 1981 to 1985, with the van continuing to 1990. You could get a four-door sedan, a pillarless two-door hardtop, a wagon/van, or a five-door hatchback, which was the first hatchback Skyline. Six-cylinder GT models (HR30) use the L20E and the turbocharged L20ET. Collectors go after the RS models (DR30), which have Nissan's 16-valve twin-cam FJ20 four. First came the 2000RS of October 1981 with the FJ20E. Then came the 2000 Turbo RS with the FJ20ET in February 1983, and the intercooled "Turbo C" in February 1984. Gross ratings for those three were 150 PS, 190 PS and 205 PS. In August 1983 a facelift gave the RS its slim-headlight, grille-less "Tekkamen" (iron mask) front, and the better-equipped RS-X arrived that same year. With RS cars, the chassis plate and originality decide the value.

What to check on a Skyline R30
- The chassis number on the plate has to match the firewall stamping, and an RS has to read DR30. HR30 means the six-cylinder GT, so an HR30 with an iron-mask nose is still a GT.
- A Turbo C has the intercooler opening in the lower left of the front apron and an intercooled FJ20ET. You won't find either on a 1983 Turbo RS.
- Make sure the equipment fits the claimed grade. Over the plainer RS, the RS-X added power steering, power windows and a power lumbar support.
- Compare the front end with the build date. The Tekkamen nose arrived in August 1983, so an earlier car wearing one has been converted.
- Engine swaps are common on cars this age. Confirm it's an FJ20E or FJ20ET and check the engine number.
- Rust in the sills, floors and wheel arches, and around the window and taillight surrounds.
What it costs to import a Skyline R30
The card prices above are what each car costs in Japan. The shipped price on a card is that car delivered to your nearest US port, with ocean freight and export fees included. We then clear it through US customs as your importer of record and handle the title, so there's no customs broker for you to hire. The full cost breakdown has the details.
Is the Skyline R30 legal to import?
Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year. If the exact R30 you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.
How buying one from us works
We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan, with photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

What do you check before buying a Nissan Skyline R30?
Every car is inspected in person in Japan before any money moves. On this chassis we look hardest at: The chassis number on the plate has to match the firewall stamping, and an RS has to read DR30. HR30 means the six-cylinder GT, so an HR30 with an iron-mask nose is still a GT; A Turbo C has the intercooler opening in the lower left of the front apron and an intercooled FJ20ET. You won't find either on a 1983 Turbo RS; Make sure the equipment fits the claimed grade. Over the plainer RS, the RS-X added power steering, power windows and a power lumbar support; Compare the front end with the build date. The Tekkamen nose arrived in August 1983, so an earlier car wearing one has been converted.
What is the difference between the R30 RS and GT?
Four cylinders against six. The RS (DR30) uses the FJ20 four-cylinder twin-cam, from the 2000RS of 1981 through the turbocharged and intercooled cars of 1984-85. GT models (HR30) use the L20 single-cam six, with or without a turbo. The RS was the performance and racing model, while the GT is the more comfortable tourer.
What is the Tekkamen?
The name means "iron mask". It's what people call the RS after the August 1983 facelift, which gave it slim headlights and a front end with no conventional grille. An RS from before the facelift has the earlier grille front.
What does Turbo C mean?
Turbo C is the intercooled FJ20ET that went into the Turbo RS and RS-X from February 1984. It's rated at 205 PS gross, up from 190 PS for the earlier turbo without an intercooler. For a quick visual check, look for the intercooler opening in the lower left of the front apron.
