Toyota Supra A70 (MK3) For Sale — Import From Japan
In Japan, the A70 was the first Supra sold under that name alone instead of as the Celica XX. Toyota built this third generation from February 1986 to 1993. It's a three-door liftback with double-wishbone suspension at all four corners, and from June 1986 it also came as the Aerotop, with a removable roof panel. Japanese buyers got a different engine lineup from the US. The 2.0-liter GA70 cars had the 1G-GEU or the 1G-GTE twin-turbo, and the 3.0-liter MA70 cars had the 7M-GTE turbo (230 PS at launch). Then in August 1990 the JZA70 2.5GT Twin Turbo arrived with the 1JZ-GTE, rated at 280 PS. The chassis code tells you which engine a car was built with, and that's where most of the value is. The rare one is the 1988 Turbo A, limited to 500 cars. A turbo car with a manual gearbox is what most buyers are after. With an MA70, start by asking about the head gasket.

What to check on a Supra A70 (MK3)
- Check the 7M head gasket on every MA70. Many 7M-GE and 7M-GTE gaskets have failed, with the low factory head-bolt torque widely blamed. Milky oil under the filler cap, brown coolant or a reservoir that keeps overflowing are the signs to look for. Ask whether the head's been redone, and with what bolts or studs.
- The chassis code on the model plate should agree with the engine. A JZA70 left the factory with the 1JZ-GTE. An MA70 with a 1JZ fitted is a swap and should be priced as one, not as a JZA70.
- Both turbos on a 1JZ-GTE car need checking for smoke, shaft play and clean boost. Ceramic turbine wheels were used on the early 1JZ-GTE turbos, and they're known to delaminate.
- On an Aerotop, water marks on the headliner or a damp trunk floor point to leaks at the roof panel seals and drains.
- The Twin Turbo R left the factory with a Torsen LSD and Bilstein dampers. On a car sold as an R, confirm they're there rather than relying on badges or seats.
What it costs to import a Supra A70 (MK3)
The card prices above are what each car costs in Japan. The shipped price on a card is that car delivered to your nearest US port, with ocean freight and export fees included. We then clear it through US customs as your importer of record and handle the title, so there's no customs broker for you to hire. The full cost breakdown has the details.
Is the Supra A70 (MK3) legal to import?
Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year. If the exact A70 (MK3) you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.
How buying one from us works
We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan, with photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

What do you check before buying a Toyota Supra A70 (MK3)?
Every car is inspected in person in Japan before any money moves. On this chassis we look hardest at: Check the 7M head gasket on every MA70. Many 7M-GE and 7M-GTE gaskets have failed, with the low factory head-bolt torque widely blamed. Milky oil under the filler cap, brown coolant or a reservoir that keeps overflowing are the signs to look for. Ask whether the head's been redone, and with what bolts or studs; The chassis code on the model plate should agree with the engine. A JZA70 left the factory with the 1JZ-GTE. An MA70 with a 1JZ fitted is a swap and should be priced as one, not as a JZA70; Both turbos on a 1JZ-GTE car need checking for smoke, shaft play and clean boost. Ceramic turbine wheels were used on the early 1JZ-GTE turbos, and they're known to delaminate; On an Aerotop, water marks on the headliner or a damp trunk floor point to leaks at the roof panel seals and drains.
What is the difference between an MA70 and a JZA70 Supra?
It comes down to the engine. An MA70 uses the 3.0-liter 7M, and the 7M-GTE turbo was rated at 230 PS at launch. The JZA70 came along in August 1990 with the 2.5-liter 1JZ-GTE twin-turbo, rated at 280 PS. Since the 7M's known weak point is its head gasket, an MA70's repair history matters as much as its mileage.
What is a Supra Turbo A?
Toyota built the Turbo A in 1988 as a homologation special so it could race the Supra in Group A. About 500 were made, and the 7M-GTE was uprated to 270 PS. So few exist that you should confirm one from its paperwork and model code rather than its badges.
Is a Japanese A70 different from a US Supra?
US cars used the 3.0-liter 7M engines, while the 2.0-liter GA70 models and the 1JZ-GTE JZA70 were Japanese-market cars. Every JDM car is right-hand drive, too.
