Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90 Series For Sale — Import From Japan

Toyota moved the Prado toward passenger use with this second generation, the 90-series, released in May 1996 and built until 2002. It grew larger, and four-wheel drive went from part-time to full-time. Independent double wishbones sit up front, with a four-link, coil-sprung rear axle, the same layout as the Hilux Surf of the time. It came as a short-wheelbase three-door (90) seating five or a long-wheelbase five-door (95) with up to eight seats. Japanese-market engines started with the 3.4-liter 5VZ-FE V6 at 185 PS and the intercooled 3.0-liter 1KZ-TE turbodiesel, 140 PS at launch. The 2.7-liter 3RZ-FE four-cylinder joined in April 1997 with 150 PS, and the common-rail 1KD-FTV diesel arrived in July 2000 with 170 PS. You can tell the engine from the chassis code prefix (VZJ, KZJ, RZJ or KDJ). Each diesel has one well-known weak point, so service history counts for more than mileage.

What to check on a Land Cruiser Prado 90 Series

What it costs to import a Land Cruiser Prado 90 Series

The card prices above are what each car costs in Japan. The shipped price on a card is that car delivered to your nearest US port, with ocean freight and export fees included. We then clear it through US customs as your importer of record and handle the title, so there's no customs broker for you to hire. The full cost breakdown has the details.

Is the Land Cruiser Prado 90 Series legal to import?

Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year. If the exact 90 Series you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.

How buying one from us works

We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan, with photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

As for the 28 still too new, we can buy one now and store it in Japan until it qualifies. Month and year of manufacture are what count, and we check the exact build date before you commit.

How long does it take to get a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90 Series from Japan?

Plan on about 45–60 days from purchase. The car is inspected and exported in Japan, spends 3–5 weeks at sea to your nearest US port (East Coast, West Coast, Gulf and Honolulu), and then goes through US customs, duty and title. We handle every step as your importer of record.

What do you check before buying a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90 Series?

Every car is inspected in person in Japan before any money moves. On this chassis we look hardest at: On a KZJ, white smoke at a cold start, milky residue under the oil cap and coolant loss without a visible leak all point to a 1KZ-TE head cracked by overheating; When the 1KD-FTV's copper injector seals fail on a KDJ, combustion gas gets into the oil, and the carbon it forms can block the oil pickup. Ask whether the seals or injectors have been replaced; Engage and release the center differential lock and watch that its indicator follows. With the lock off, the truck shouldn't bind or scrub on tight turns; For frame and underbody rust, go over the chassis rails, rear crossmember, wheel wells and door seams.

1KZ-TE or 1KD-FTV?

The common-rail, direct-injection 1KD-FTV replaced the 1KZ-TE in July 2000 and is rated at 170 PS against 140 PS. Each has a known weak point. The 1KZ-TE's head can crack after overheating, and the 1KD-FTV's injector seals can fail, so service history matters more than which engine you pick.

Is the 90-series Prado the same as a Hilux Surf 185?

The front and rear suspension layout is shared, and so are the engine families, but the bodies differ. The Prado comes as a three-door or an eight-seat five-door with full-time four-wheel drive. The 185 Surf is a five-door only, and it's the Japanese version of the third-generation 4Runner.

Three-door or five-door?

On a 2,370 mm wheelbase, the three-door (VZJ90, KZJ90) seats five. Up to eight people fit in the five-door (VZJ95, KZJ95), which has a 2,675 mm wheelbase.
