Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 70 Series For Sale — Import From Japan
Before the Prado name existed, this truck was the light-duty wagon of the 70-series Land Cruiser range. In April 1990 Toyota added a long-wheelbase five-door to the short three-door and split the wagons off as the Prado, aimed at the Mitsubishi Pajero. It's the first Land Cruiser Prado, and the 90-series replaced it in May 1996. Unlike the heavy-duty 70-series Land Cruiser, it rides on coil springs and uses lighter-duty axles and four-cylinder turbodiesels. Four-wheel drive is part-time, with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Japanese-market cars launched with the 97 PS 2.4-liter 2L-TE (LJ71 three-door, LJ78 five-door). In May 1993 the 130 PS 3.0-liter 1KZ-TE replaced it, in the KZJ71 and KZJ78. The five-door seats eight in three rows. A KZJ has about a third more power, and the short three-door is the more compact off-roader.

What to check on a Land Cruiser Prado 70 Series
- Rust in the chassis rails, crossmembers, floor pans and sills. On a truck this age, structural rust is the expensive problem.
- On KZJ trucks, the 1KZ-TE's aluminum head can crack after overheating. Signs are white smoke on a cold start, milky residue under the oil cap and coolant loss with no visible leak.
- The cooling system protects that head, so look over the radiator, viscous fan clutch and thermostat, and find out how old the coolant is.
- Put it in 4H and 4L, and make sure the front axle drives and disengages cleanly.
- An LJ should have the 2.4-liter 2L-TE and a KZJ the 3.0-liter 1KZ-TE. If the chassis code and engine don't match, the engine has been swapped.
What it costs to import a Land Cruiser Prado 70 Series
The card prices above are what each car costs in Japan. The shipped price on a card is that car delivered to your nearest US port, with ocean freight and export fees included. We then clear it through US customs as your importer of record and handle the title, so there's no customs broker for you to hire. The full cost breakdown has the details.
Is the Land Cruiser Prado 70 Series legal to import?
Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year. If the exact 70 Series you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.
How buying one from us works
We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan, with photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

What do you check before buying a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 70 Series?
Every car is inspected in person in Japan before any money moves. On this chassis we look hardest at: Rust in the chassis rails, crossmembers, floor pans and sills. On a truck this age, structural rust is the expensive problem; On KZJ trucks, the 1KZ-TE's aluminum head can crack after overheating. Signs are white smoke on a cold start, milky residue under the oil cap and coolant loss with no visible leak; The cooling system protects that head, so look over the radiator, viscous fan clutch and thermostat, and find out how old the coolant is; Put it in 4H and 4L, and make sure the front axle drives and disengages cleanly.
Is the 70-series Prado the same as a Land Cruiser 70?
They share the 70-series designation, but the Prado is the light-duty version, sold under that name from April 1990, with coil springs, lighter axles and four-cylinder turbodiesels. The heavy-duty 70-series Land Cruiser is a separate, tougher truck with larger diesels.
2L-TE or 1KZ-TE?
The chassis code tells you. LJ7x trucks have the 2.4-liter 2L-TE with 97 PS, and KZJ7x trucks the 3.0-liter 1KZ-TE, which arrived in May 1993 with 130 PS. On paper the 1KZ-TE is the stronger engine. Its head doesn't tolerate overheating, though, so cooling history matters.
Three-door or five-door?
The five-door (LJ78, KZJ78) is the long one, with a 2,730 mm wheelbase and three rows for eight. The three-door (LJ71, KZJ71) has a 2,310 mm wheelbase and seats five.
