Subaru Impreza GC For Sale — Import From Japan
From November 1992 to August 2000, Japan got the GC, the first-generation Impreza sedan, alongside the GF Sport Wagon and, from January 1995, the two-door Retna coupe. The turbocharged WRX (GC8) is why it gets imported. It has a 2.0-liter EJ20 flat-four and all-wheel drive, and the engine was rated at 240 PS at launch, 260 PS from late 1994 and 280 PS from September 1996. Subaru Tecnica International's WRX STi followed in January 1994 and was updated every year through Version VI. Lightweight competition bases came as the Type RA sedans and, from Version III, the two-door Type R coupe. The 22B-STi Version of 1998 is a widebody coupe with a 2.2-liter engine, limited to 400 cars for Japan. Each yearly update carries an applied-model letter from A to G after the GC8 code, and the F and G cars (September 1998 on) use the redesigned Phase 2 engine. Non-turbo sedans with 1.5- to 2.0-liter engines share the GC code.

What to check on a Impreza GC
- Confirm STi status from the chassis plate and the car's papers rather than badges, wings or gold wheels. WRX and non-turbo cars dressed as STis exist.
- A remapped EJ20 with no paperwork is a risk. Ask for timing belt records and a compression or leak-down test, and look for oil leaks, oil consumption and smoke.
- The GC's five-speed had a reputation for fragility behind the 280 PS engines, and the next STi moved to a stronger six-speed. Listen for synchro crunch and check that it doesn't jump out of gear.
- On a Type RA STi or Type R STi, turn the DCCD dial through its range. The center differential should respond and the warning lights should behave.
- Get underneath and look for poor repairs or signs of a re-shell, then check the rear wheel arches, rear strut tops, sills and floor for rust.
What it costs to import a Impreza GC
The card prices above are what each car costs in Japan. The shipped price on a card is that car delivered to your nearest US port, with ocean freight and export fees included. We then clear it through US customs as your importer of record and handle the title, so there's no customs broker for you to hire. The full cost breakdown has the details.
Is the Impreza GC legal to import?
Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year. If the exact GC you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.
How buying one from us works
We bid at Japanese auctions and buy from dealer stock on your behalf. Before any money moves, the car is physically inspected in Japan, with photos, video, and a condition report, not just an auction sheet grade. After purchase we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title, so the car arrives ready to register. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

What do you check before buying a Subaru Impreza GC?
Every car is inspected in person in Japan before any money moves. On this chassis we look hardest at: Confirm STi status from the chassis plate and the car's papers rather than badges, wings or gold wheels. WRX and non-turbo cars dressed as STis exist; A remapped EJ20 with no paperwork is a risk. Ask for timing belt records and a compression or leak-down test, and look for oil leaks, oil consumption and smoke; The GC's five-speed had a reputation for fragility behind the 280 PS engines, and the next STi moved to a stronger six-speed. Listen for synchro crunch and check that it doesn't jump out of gear; On a Type RA STi or Type R STi, turn the DCCD dial through its range. The center differential should respond and the warning lights should behave.
What do the STi Version numbers and applied-model letters mean?
Subaru updated the Impreza every year and gave each update a letter, from A (1992) through G (1999), which follows GC8 in the model code. The WRX STi arrived in January 1994, and its later updates were numbered. Version III came with the D update in September 1996, then IV with E, V with F and VI with G.
WRX, Type RA or Type R?
The WRX is the standard four-door. Type RA is the lighter, competition-oriented sedan, with a close-ratio gearbox and fewer comfort items, and the Type R is the two-door coupe added with Version III. You get a driver-controlled center differential on the Type RA STi and Type R STi.
What changed with Version V?
Version V is the F update of September 1998. It brought a new WRX front bumper, multi-reflector headlights, the redesigned Phase 2 engine block and heads, and a large rear spoiler as standard on STi sedans and coupes. A year earlier, Version IV had brought the redesigned dashboard shared with the Forester and opposed-piston rear brakes on the Type RA STi and Type R STi.
