Toyota Hilux Surf 130 Series For Sale — Import From Japan
Sold from May 1989 to 1995, the 130-series Hilux Surf was the second generation and the first with a full steel wagon body in place of a plastic canopy over a pickup bed. It's the Japanese-market version of the second-generation 4Runner, and it was also the first Surf offered as a four-door. The two-door was sold alongside it until 1993. Underneath, it's still Hilux-based, with independent front suspension, a solid rear axle on coil springs and part-time four-wheel drive. Japanese engines changed through the run. The 2.4-liter 2L-T turbodiesel and 2.0-liter 3Y-E petrol were there at launch, the 3.0-liter 3VZ-E V6 came in August 1990, and the 3.0-liter 1KZ-TE turbodiesel followed in 1993. A wide-body version arrived in 1991. Chassis codes follow the engine (LN130, YN130, VZN130 and KZN130). For most buyers it comes down to the 1KZ-TE diesel or the 3VZ-E V6, and the V6's documented weak point is its head gaskets.

What to check on a Hilux Surf 130 Series
- On VZN130 V6 trucks, look hard at the 3VZ-E head gaskets. Toyota extended warranty coverage and ran a service campaign for this engine in US pickups and 4Runners. Watch for coolant loss, overheating, white exhaust smoke or oil in the coolant, and ask whether the gaskets have been replaced.
- A KZN130 with 1KZ-TE cylinder head trouble shows white smoke on a cold start, milky residue under the oil cap and coolant loss with no visible leak.
- Look for rust on the frame as well as the rear hatch frame, lower rear quarters and sills.
- Try four-wheel drive on dry, level ground. If the indicator flashes, a vacuum leak is the usual cause, since the front axle engages through a vacuum actuator.
- Wide bodies arrived in 1991 and two-doors were dropped in 1993, so the body, year and code on the plate should agree.
What it costs to import a Hilux Surf 130 Series
The card prices above are what each car costs in Japan. The shipped price on a card is that car delivered to your nearest US port, with ocean freight and export fees included. See the 25-year rule explained.

Is the 130 Hilux Surf the same as a 4Runner?
It's Japan's version of the second-generation 4Runner. Besides being right-hand drive, it got diesels the US 4Runner didn't, the 2L-T and later the 1KZ-TE.
V6 or diesel?
Toyota ran a US service campaign for the 3VZ-E V6's documented head gasket problem. The 1KZ-TE diesel came along in 1993 with 130 PS, and its aluminum head needs a healthy cooling system to protect it. Whichever you lean toward, ask for the cooling-system and head history first.
