Eligibility runs on month and year of manufacture, not model year. As of today, anything built October 2001 or earlier qualifies. Within a generation marked “phasing in” some build dates are legal and others are not, so the individual car matters. Tell us the chassis and we'll check its exact build date before you commit.

What it costs to import a Hijet

Prices below are for the car in Japan. Each card also shows a shipped price, which is the car delivered to your nearest US port with ocean freight and export fees included. From the port, we clear it through US customs for you and title it, so you don't need to hire a customs broker. See the full cost breakdown.

Is the Hijet legal to import?

Any vehicle 25 years or older is legal to import into the USA without meeting modern FMVSS safety or EPA emissions standards. Eligibility runs on the month and year of manufacture, not just the model year, so within a single generation some build dates qualify before others. If the exact car you want is not yet eligible, we can buy it and store it in Japan until it is. See the 25-year rule explained.

How buying one from us works

The cars listed here are for sale at set prices from dealers in Japan, so there’s no auction and no bidding (we can also find you one at auction). Ask for a quote on any car. If you’d like, we inspect it in person in Japan first and send you photos, video and a condition report; a refundable deposit books the inspection. Once you decide to buy, we handle export, ocean freight to your nearest US port, customs clearance, import duty, and US title if you want it. Typical timeline is 45–60 days from purchase to delivery.

Daihatsu Hijet FAQ

Is the Daihatsu Hijet legal to import to the USA?

S80P–S83P: Fully eligible — the entire run is 25+ years old. S100P / S110P: Fully eligible — the entire run is 25+ years old. S200P / S210P: Phasing in — cars built up to October 2001 are eligible now; the last cars qualify in January 2033. S201P / S211P: Not yet — the earliest cars become eligible in January 2033. S500P / S510P: Not yet — the earliest cars become eligible in October 2039. S320V / S321V (Cargo): Not yet — the earliest cars become eligible in January 2030. Eligibility runs on month and year of manufacture, not model year — as of today anything built October 2001 or earlier qualifies. The year on a Japanese listing is the year the truck was first registered, not the month it was built, so we confirm the build date before you commit. If it's too new, we can buy it now and store it in Japan until it qualifies.

How much does a Daihatsu Hijet cost?

Counting the 151 Daihatsu Hijet in our Japan stock that can be imported today and list a price, prices run from about $1,146 to $12,322 before import costs, with a median of $2,717 and the middle half between $2,138 and $4,470. 254 in Japanese dealer stock today (252 with a listed price, 2 price on request). It changes every day as cars sell and new ones get listed.

How many Daihatsu Hijet for sale are manual?

Counting the 254 that list a transmission, 204 are manual and 50 are automatic.

How long does it take to get a Daihatsu Hijet from Japan?

Plan on about 45–60 days from purchase. The car is inspected and exported in Japan, spends 3–5 weeks at sea to your nearest US port (East Coast, West Coast, Gulf and Honolulu), and then goes through US customs, duty and title. We handle every step for you.

What do you check before buying a Daihatsu Hijet?

Before you buy, we can inspect the car in person in Japan, with photos, video and a condition report rather than an auction-sheet grade alone; a refundable deposit books the inspection. We also check the build date against the 25-year rule.

What is a Hijet Jumbo?

A Hijet Truck with the back of the cab extended, for more room inside and seats that recline. Daihatsu first sold one in June 1983. A Jumbo carries the same chassis code as the standard truck, so the grade on the listing is how you tell them apart.

Is the Daihatsu Hijet 4x4?

Many are. Daihatsu added four-wheel drive in 1982, and each generation since has its own 4WD code: S66P (to 1986), S81P and S83P (1986–1994), S110P (1994–1999), then S210P, S211P and today's S510P. The 4WD is part-time, so you choose when to engage it. Many 4WD manuals add a high/low range, and the farm and top grades a differential lock Daihatsu calls the Super Diff Lock.

Is a Toyota Pixis Truck or a Subaru Sambar the same as a Hijet?

Newer ones are. Daihatsu has built the Hijet Truck for Toyota, as the Pixis Truck, since December 2011, and for Subaru, as the Sambar, since April 2012. A Sambar built before then is a different truck, designed and built by Subaru with its engine at the back.
